Modestas Pitrėnas and Measha Brueggergosman

2018 November 18, Sunday, 19.00
Lithuanian National Philharmonic Hall, Vilnius
Modestas Pitrėnas and Measha Brueggergosman

ARNOLD BAX – symphonic poem November Woods
MAURICE RAVEL – Song cycle for soprano and orchestra Shéhérazade
ADOLF SKULTE – Symphony No. 5

This Sunday was chosen for symphonic music concert not by accident – on November 18th Latvia celebrates centenary of the Latvian State. Therefore, tonight’s programme offers a musical page from contemporary Latvian music treasury – the Fifth Symphony by Ādolfs Skulte, the 20th c. composer. A disciple of Jāzeps Vītols, the founder and patriarch of Latvian professional music, Skulte carried on with the classicist-romanticist music tradition. His music and artistic stance reflected complicated cultural transformations and situations of ideological compromises.

The LNSO’s creative collaboration with tonight’s soloist soprano Measha Brueggergosman, that started five years ago, offers yet another angle to dedication to Latvia. In 2013, together with Maestro Modestas Pitrėnas and Latvian violinist Baiba Skride she appeared in a programme of works by Wagner, Tchaikovsky and Gruodis in Dzintars Concert Hall in Jūrmala.

The concert programme also features works by two composers active at the juncture of the 19th and 20th centuries – English composer Arnold Bax and French composer Maurice Ravel.
