Guilhaume Santana, a renowned French bassoon player, makes his Lithuanian debut. Born in Toulouse, Santana studied in Hanover and Karajan Academy in Berlin. A recipient of Mendelssohn Prize he has for over ten years served as the principal bassoonist in Mozart Orchestra (MO), the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Luzern Festival Orchestra; he is also a guest principal bassoonist of Berlin Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. As a soloist he has appeared with various orchestras under the direction of such baton masters as Claudio Abbado, Karel Mark Chichon and Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. Notable labels Deutsche Grammophon and Claves have released his recordings.

The concert programme will include concertos for bassoon and orchestra, which the soloist intends to record for his new CD. In addition to bassoon concertos the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra will present Onutė Narbutaitė’s subtle musical canvas Was There a Butterfly? The opus received its Lithuanian premiere at the Gaida Contemporary Music Festival in 2014 (St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra). However, its world premiere took place more than half-a-year earlier in Finland in a performance of the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, which commissioned the work. The LCO also will offer Richard Strauss’ lyrical and contemplative Metamorphosen for strings.

Tonight Vilmantas Kaliūnas, a talented conductor who has recently frequented Lithuanian scene, will grace the podium. A conductor of Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra, he has in the past served as the Music Director of the Saarlouis (Germany) Symphony Orchestra, worked with such orchestras as Berliner Sinfonietta, Saarbrucken’s Collegium Instrumentale, Thüringen Philharmonie Gotha, Jenaer Philharmonie, Bulgarian Pazardjik Symphony Orchestra, etc. He has led the performances of winners of the ARD Competition and soloists including Guilhaume Santana.
