Love Conquers Everything

PIOTR TCHAIKOVSKY – Overture-fantasia Romeo and Julietafter William Shakespeare

SERGEI PROKOFIEV – Concerto for violin and orchestra No. 1 in D major, Op. 19

NIKOLAI RIMSKY-KORSAKOV – Symphonic suite Scheherazade, Op. 35

Assumedly, in his 10th Eclogue Virgil wrote the famous sentence Omnia vincit amor (Love conquers all). His eclogues are bucolic sketches of glamorised love, miniatures forged from real life situations. As an everlasting creative source, love has inspired many a poet and composer to express himself in word and sound. Thus it is not coincidence, that tonight’s programme presents Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic compositions relating two different love stories. The two opuses will be separated by Prokofiev’s neo-classical First Violin Concerto, which reveals the composer’s pure, reserved and spiritual lyricism despite the fact that it is coupled with grotesque. Japanese violinist Mayumi Kanagawa’s violin is often likened to rich, warm and genuine timbre of viola. The performer is a winner of Jascha Heifetz Violin Competition in Vilnius (2013). She also captured first prize in Princess Astrid International Music Competition in Trondheim (2016) and second prize in a prestigious LongThibaudCrespin Competition in Paris (2018). Thus, it is truly interesting to hear her again in Lithuania and become witnesses of her swift musical career.
