Tales of Ourselves

Feliksas Bajoras, Giedrius Kuprevičius, Giedrius Svilainis, Vytautas Germanavičius etc.

This variegated and thematically rich programme presenting Lithuanian composers not only reveals the ardour of talented performers, but also revisits the foremost examples of Lithuanian chamber vocal and instrumental music. Via professional music the performers attempt to reach the archetype of folk music, namely the physiognomy of the nation. The original works are based on folklore and intonations characteristic of different dialects. Texts and music depict mystical creatures (fairies, mermaids, devils, talking trees, spirits of the forest), nature’s beauty and its gifts.

Feliksas Bajoras’ unique, colourful and theatrical cycle Suite of Tales for voice and piano (1968), the programme’s focal work, will be performed by soprano and accordion. The composer has employed folktales (not in rhyme), for which he has composed music resembling folk idiom. In addition to this cycle young singer Dovilė Kazonaitė, an avid enthusiast of Lithuanian vocal music, will enrich this concert with Giedrius Kuprevičius’ expressive 8 Metaphysical Romances.

The programme also features works byGiedrius Svilainis, Vytautas Germanavičius and other Lithuanian composers – masters of combining the folksong motives and idiosyncratic sound of birbynė, as well asimbuing kanklės and soprano duo with Lithuanian folksong flavour. The contrastive programme offers myriads of Lithuanian music subtleties.
