For the opening of the 2007/2008 concert season the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under its artistic director and chief conductor, Prof. Juozas Domarkas, partners the Czech pianist Paul Kaspar in the performance of Fryderyk Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto.

Educated at the music academies in Prague and Munich, Paul Kaspar is much appreciated both as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, and is known in the United States and Canada as well. He also performs regularly for the broadcasting companies, such as the Bayerischer Rundfunk, Germany. The American Intune magazine hailed Kaspar “a sensational pianist comparable to Rudolf Firkusny.” An ardent champion for the wider appreciation of his compatriot composer Bohuslav Martinů, Kaspar has recorded several CDs of his piano works.

Featured in the second half of the programme is Martinů’s Symphony No. 4, whose character was once described by the composer as a kind of “Schubertian lyricism.”
