Part of the FAMILY SERIES

Our childhood would be unthinkable without the folk tale about Eglė, the daughter of the Earth, and Žilvinas, the son of the Underwater, their beautiful yet ill-fated love and their children, who turned into trees. This tale has inspired artists for many generations.

Composer Kristina Vasiliauskaitė recounts: “I worked on this composition with eagerness and inspiration. I tried to put a lot of colour and insight into the fairy-tale characters: in the beginning – young and carefree Eglė; then treachery of the grass snakes; love and yearning for motherland; brothers’ vengeance; betrayal and grief… Those are the feelings that often accompany us in our life. Thus it is not only in a fairy-tale that the struggle between good and evil takes place…”

We bring this fairy-tale after a poem by Salomėja Nėris back to Philharmonic Hall for those who missed this staged musical fairy-tale last season.
