Epitaphium temporum pereunti

JUOZAS ŽILEVIČIUS – Symphony No. 1 (edition and instrumentation by Arvydas Malcys)

BRONIUS KUTAVIČIUS – Epitaphium temporum pereunti

The Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Kaunas State Choir and Choir Vilnius offer an exceptional Lithuanian music programme of works associated with the history of Lithuanian culture. One of them – recently reconstructed Symphony in F minor by Juozas Žilevičius, a composer, organist, conductor and pedagogue active in the first-half of the 20th century. He composed the opus in 1919 while a student in Sankt Petersburg. Premiered in Kaunas few years later, the opus is considered to be the first Lithuanian symphony. Unfortunately, the score perished in the fire in Šiauliai during the WWII. In 2017, Arvydas Malcys, a composer and the LNSO’s cellist, made the Symphony’s edition and instrumentation.

After a long break Bronius Kutavičius’, symbol of Lithuanian music, opus returns to concert stage. He composed his Symphony-Oratorio Epitaphium temporum pereunti for choir and orchestra in 1998. The composer wrote the first and the second movement in 1973 on occasion of the 650th anniversary of Vilnius. Twenty-five years later he revisited both movements – edited, altered the instrumental line-up and also complemented two new movements on Sigitas Geda lyrics (the first and second movements employed the texts from Bychowiec Chronicle and Žygimantas Liauksminas’ Ars et praxis musica). Four-movement work pays homage to the most significant moments in the history of Vilnius – Christianisation of Lithuania, foundation of City of Vilnius and the University, and re-consecration of the Cathedral. At the concert in Vilnius University St Johns’ Church the work’s performance will mark the 440th anniversary of the foundation of Vilnius University.
