Advent afternoon with Musica humana

Works by GEORG FRIEDRICH HÄNDEL

Musica humana Ensemble named this Advent concert Joy and Hope of Holy Christmas. And Händel is the best advocate of this kind of joy. The programme features his Water Music suites, concerti grossi as well as arias from the opera Guilio Cesare and the oratorio Judas Maccabaeus.

The great baroque composer Händel could be called cosmopolitan composer: he was born in Germany, studied in his native country and Italy, spent large part of his life in England. His oeuvre includes over 70 operas (Alcina, Serse, Guilio Cesare) and oratorios (Messiah, Samson, Judas Maccabaeus, Belshazzar, Saul, Israel in Egypt), as well as cantatas, hymns, concertos for organ and orchestra. Not a single genre is associated with certain compositional school; his music merges various elements of German, Italian, English and French music traditions. His contemporaries maintain in their memoires that Händel worshiped art of music, was diligent worker, was a secluded person, avoided gatherings and any kind of entertainments. The composer seemed to be austere and grim, however he was kind-hearted and witty.
