"…The choice of repertoire and performance demonstrated Baroque at its best. Ensemble’s performance filled us with satisfaction, comfort, revived our minds and souls… <…> Musica Humana is a perfect master of the vitally important principle – the free expression of musical art…"

Bornholms Musikfestival, 1995

The Musica Humana Chamber Ensemble was founded in 1974 at the initiative of Prof. Algirdas Vizgirda who has led the ensemble ever since its inception. Musica Humana was one of the first ensembles in Lithuania to join the revival movement of historical performance in Europe. During more than three decades of its successful career Musica Humana presented many projects dedicated to the great German, French, Italian and English baroque composers, such as a series of 16 concerts “Early instrumental and vocal music of Europe,” a series of 10 programmes “Baroque Route,” series of 8 concerts “French music: from Renaissance to contemporary.” The Ensemble also frequently arranges and performs music form the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

"…The interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach by the Musica Humana Chamber Ensemble opened to us a unique world of genius. The performance was full of harmony and pure style, with every phrase savouring of genuine artistic expression..."

7 meno dienos, 1999

The Ensemble’s repertoire, however, is not limited to early music alone, encompassing also newly written chamber music composed especially for the group’s setting, which may vary from the core basso continuo ensemble of four players to a small orchestra with soloing singers and/or instrumentalists. A number of most renowned Lithuanian composers have dedicated their pieces to Musica Humana, including Osvaldas Balakauskas, Bronius Kutavičius, Algirdas Martinaitis, Feliksas Bajoras and others. The Ensemble’s versatility in terms of repertoire and experience is documented on six full-length CD recordings.

"...The musical material of the composition was unfolded in its all impressive variety; and after dizzying wanderings in the contrastive worlds of moods and images, the audience’s aesthetic experiences finally blended into a sensation of triumphal festive magnificence... Here the unifying hand of the meticulous expert in early music, Algirdas Vizgirda, could be felt..."

Lietuvos rytas, 2001

The ensemble has given over 2000 concerts in Lithuania and abroad, including France, Germany, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Scandinavian countries and the UK; participated in numerous Lithuanian and international music festivals, such as Gaida, Pažaislis, Klaipėdos muzikos pavasaris, Marių klavyrai, Vale of Glamorgan in Britain, Ars Baltica in Nürnberg and Bornholm Musikfestival in Denmark. Since 1999 Musica Humana has been the resident ensemble of the Kuronian Spit Summer Festival founded by Prof. Algirdas Vizgirda and devoted to baroque, classical and modern Baltic chamber music.
