LEONARD BERNSTEIN – Symphony No. 2 The Age of Anxiety for piano and orchestra
GUSTAV HOLST – The Planets, suite for large orchestra, Op. 32

Tonight Modestas Pitrėnas, the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the LNSO, takes his place at the podium and Guoda Gedvilaitė, the Lithuanian pianist residing in Germany, takes her seat at the piano. Lately, the pianist has been frequenting the stage of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Hall where she presents an original project – series of classical concerts Clara Schumann Salon in which the intellectuals of the 19th century “get alive” and “meet” the audience. But tonight she will join the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra in Bernstein’s Symphony The Age of Anxiety quite seldom performed on concert stage. Having chosen Wystan Hugh Auden’s six-part poem, the winner of the Pulitzer Prize, as his inspiration Bernstein worked on it in 1948–1949 in the US and on his visit to Israel. He stated that Auden’s poem was “one of the most shattering examples of pure virtuosity in the history of English poetry”. The work was dedicated to Serge Koussevitzky, Bernstein’s friend and long-time conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

The idea of The Planets was suggested to Holst by Clifford Bax who introduced him to astrology when the two were part of a small group of English artists holidaying in Mallorca; Holst worked on the composition in 1914–1916. The Suite is in seven movements revealing the corresponding astrological character of each planet. When composing The Planets Holst initially scored the work for piano duo except for Neptune, which was meant for the organ. Later he orchestrated the Suite for a symphony orchestra.
