Traditionally, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society opens every new concert season with a symphonic music concert. This time the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and Maestro Modestas Pitrėnas collaborate with German cellist Johannes Moser. Tonight the German musician begins his intensive 2017–2018 concert season. Soon after his Lithuanian appearance Moser will focus on recordings for his new CD featuring concertos by W. Lutosławski and H. Dutilleux in which the cellist will collaborate with the eminent Rundfunksymphonieorchester Berlin under the baton of Danish master Thomas Søndergård. October will see Moser touring the USA with Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra, Oregon SO and Huston SO. At the end of September together with bayan player Elsbeth Moser, violinist Vadim Gluzman and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich the cellist will give a world premiere to Sofia Gubaidulina’s Triple Concerto at the prestigious Zürich Tonhalle.

Tonight’s concert programme features pompous march and impressive Concerto for cello and orchestra by Edward Elgar, the foremost English composer active at the juncture of the 19th and 20th centuries, and First Symphony (Titán) by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler. Assumingly, the composer chose this title because the composition troubled him. For a long time he could not make up his mind whether his opus should be called symphonic poem, tone poem or a symphony. It was the first truly grandioso composition for a large orchestra consisting of more than 100 musicians.
