Clarinet Fest with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra

2017-11-30

On Wednesday 6 December the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society presents the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra embellished with a high and lucid solo voice. Do you wonder what will that be? The audience will hear clarinet, which rarely appears as a solo instrument with orchestra. French musician Nicolas Baldeyrou and talented Lithuanian clarinettist Rimvydas Savickas will showcase the fineness of this instrument. Conductor Vilmantas Kaliūnas will grace the podium.

Nicolas Baldeyrou is a renowned French clarinettist, winner of a number of international competitions, recipient of various awards including Carl Nielsen (Odense), Young Musicians’ (Bucharest), Rising Star program, ARD (Munich), Dos Hermanas (Spain), ICA Young Musicians’ (USA) and Bunkamura Orchard Hall (Japan). Baldeyrou’s Alma Mater is the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris. Since 2006, he has been a faculty member at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon. As a soloist he collaborates with diverse orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Prague, Tokyo and Sankt Petersburg philharmonics, the Sofia Symphony Orchestra, George Enescu Philharmonics as well as a range of French orchestras. Baldeyrou has given recitals in New York’s Carnegie Hall, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Cité de la Musique à Paris, Cologne Philharmonic Hall, Salzburg’s Mozarteum, Vienna’s Konzerthaus, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Conservatory Hall, etc. His passion for exploring new repertoires and his commitment to authenticity in his performances led him towards an interest in period instruments as well as the ones that are rarely presented on stage. Indeed, at the concert in Vilnius he will perform on a traditional clarinet and also basset-horn (alto clarinet).

Clarinettist Rimvydas Savickas, a winner of international competitions in Lithuania, Finland, the Ukraine and Latvia, earned the Bachelor Degree from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (LAMT, under prof. Algirdas Budrys), honed his skills at the Royal Danish Academy of Music (under prof. Jorgen Jensen) and in 2014 earned the Master Degree from the California State University, Fullerton (USA, under the international acclaimed clarinettist Håkan Rosengren). In Ima Hogg International Competition in Houston he was one of the 10 best soloists selected from 138 instrumentalists. Currently, Savickas teaches at the LAMT and the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Art, is a member of the Lithuanian State Wind Instrument Orchestra Trimitas. As a soloist he has appeared with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of Lithuanian Armed Forces and Čiurlionis Quartet.

What the soloists will offer for the Clarinet Fest audience? Baldeyrou will join the LCO in Swedish and Finnish music classic Bernhard Henrik Crusell’s Concerto for clarinet and orchestra No. 3, Op. 11. Both soloists will team up in Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s Konzertstück for clarinet, basset-horn and orchestra No 1 in F minor, Op. 113. In addition, the concert programme will feature the Czech music classic Josef Mysliveček’s Symphony in E flat major, ED. 10:Eb6 and Dmitry Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony in C minor, Op. 110a.

Vilmantas Kaliūnas studied the oboe and conducting in Lithuania and Germany, participated in a number of master classes. As a guest conductor Kaliūnas has appeared with Berlin Sinfonietta, Thuringia and Jena (Germany) Philharmonic orchestras, the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, Pazardzhik (Bulgaria) Symphony Orchestra, Kaunas Symphony Orchestra. In 2010–2015, the conductor served as the Artistic Director of the Saarlouis Symphony Orchestra. Since 2014, he has been a regular assistant to Maestro Karel Mark Chichon.
