To the Centenary of Jascha Heifetz’s Debut Performance at the Philharmonic

2013-12-05

On December 7th, the National Philharmonic Society presents a concert marking the centenary of Jascha Heifetz’s debut performance at the Philharmonic Hall. The concert programme features works by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Scriabin to be performed by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Juozas Domarkas, while the violin solo will be played by the Lithuanian violinist Justina Auškelytė – currently studying at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York.

On December 4th, 1913, Jascha Heifetz, the legendary violin virtuoso and the student of St. Petersburg Conservatory stood in front of the audience at the Hall of the Lithuanian Philharmonic. This appearance took place immediately after his concerts in St. Petersburg, which have received numerous reviews in the November and December editions of Peterburgskaja Gazeta, Rech and Peterburgskij Listok. The reviews were bursting with admiration and amazement – at that time Jascha was only 12 years old.  Following his appearance in Vilnius, the reviewers of our newspapers Vilenskij Vestnik and Vechernyaya Gazeta compared the boy with Willy Ferrero, a well known violinist of that time. His appearance with the symphony orchestra was referred to as sensational, he was called “the boy with a singing soul” and “wunderkind” and it was claimed that “thirteen-year-old Jascha [sic] is like Sarasate at the zenith of his fame.” At that concert the young soloist performed the challenging Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, accompanied by the Vilnius Symphony Orchestra under A. Wylezinski.

To celebrate this historical anniversary, the Philharmonic presents Justina Auškelytė  - a promising Lithuanian violinist of the young generation, a laureate and winner of 16 competitions.  She has been awarded at many major national and international violin competitions: the International Balys Dvarionas Competition (four years in a row she became a laureate of this competition), the First Prize at the International Saulius Sondeckis Competition (2006) and National Raimundas Katilius Competition (2007); Grand Prix laureate at the 2008 Balys Dvarionas Competition; Second Prize at the prestigious 3rd International Jascha Heifetz Competition, as well as prizes and awards at competitions held in Latvia, the Czech Republic and Romania. Justina Auškelytė has received awards and letters of thanks from the presidents of the Republic of Lithuania for her contribution to the Lithuanian music culture.

Justina has attended the master classes with the famous violinists and teachers, including Sergei Krylov, Pavel Berman, Sergey Kravchenko, Irina Bochkova, Alexandr Fischer, Paul Roczek, David Kim and others. In 2006, the violinist studied with Pavel Berman at the International Piano Academy Incontri con Maestro in Imola; in 2011–2013 she studied at the Perosi Academy in Biela (also with Pavel Berman), in 2011 she completed the BA studies at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (class of Professor Jurgis Dvarionas) and in 2013 she polished her technique at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (Austria) under the tutelage of Professor Boris Kushnir. In Autumn 2013 she has been admitted to the Master of Music program at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York.
