Rudolf Buchbinder’s breathtaking recital in the Gardens of Harmony


A notable classical music recital is one of the traditions of Vilnius Festival. This year it is going to be unforgettable. On June 15th the National Philharmonic will host the legendary Austrian pianist Rudolf Buchbinder! His creative career has spanned for more than 50 years, and his discography amounts to more than 100 CDs, many of which have won awards. He especially cherishes Beethoven’s music; the pianist has even authored a book My Beethoven – Life With the Master. Beethoven and his Appassionata will become the nexus of tonight’s concert: no wonder the recital is entitledAppassionata according to Rudolf Buchbinder”. 

In addition to the aforementioned book, Rudolf Buchbinder has published his autobiography Da Capo where he documented his striking artistic experience. And it is truly impressive. Celebrating his 70th birthday this season this artist appears in such prestigious venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Musikverein in Vienna and the Berliner Philharmonie; tours with Berliner Philharmoniker led by Christian Thielemann and Vienna Philharmonic under the batons of Zubin Mehta and Franz Welser-Möst.By invitation of Mariss Jansons, Rudolf Buchbinder is Artist in Residence with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. He has an especially close relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which named him an Honorary Member in 2016.

Rudolf Buchbinder’s repertoire spans from Bach to contemporary music. He has performed the cycle of 32 Beethoven sonatas more than 50 times! in Berlin, Buenos Aires, Dresden, Milan, Beijing, St. Petersburg, Zurich, Vienna and Munich among other places. As the first pianist ever he performed all Beethoven sonatas in seven concerts within one summer season at the Salzburg Festival in 2014.The Salzburg cycle was recorded live on DVD. His latest CD release is a recording of Mozart piano concertos with Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, directed by Rudolf Buchbinder from the piano. A live recording of Brahms’ two piano concertos with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Zubin Mehta was released on DVD and CD in 2016.

The pianist’s readings are based on meticulous study of source material. An avid collector of historic scores, he owns 39 complete editions of Beethoven’s piano sonatas. Furthermore, his library contains an extensive collection of first prints, original editions and copies of Brahms’ two original piano concerto scores. In 2007, Rudolf Buchbinder has founded the Grafenegg Festival and has served as its artistic director. Under his leadership, it developed into one of Europe’s foremost festivals for orchestral music within very short time. 

This season Rudolf Buchbinder’s concert itinerary is staggering! January–June 2017: Lille, Linz, Basel, Moscow, Vienna, New York, Naples, Shanghai, London, Lisbon, Roma, Prague, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Sankt Petersburg, Stuttgart, Barcelona, Alicante, Hannover, Cologne, Berlin, Brescia, Bergamo, Munich, Vienna, Baden-Baden, Sankt Petersburg; and Vilnius and the Vilnius Festival is slipped between Vienna and Baden-Baden.   

The pianist is going to enrich the Vilnius audience not only with his reading of Beethoven’s Piano sonata No 23 in F minor, Op. 57 (Appassionata), but also Bach’s English suite No 3 in G minor, BWV 808 and Schubert’s Piano sonata in B flat major, D. 960.

Rudolf Buchbinder’s recital will be held on Thursday 15 June, 19.00 at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Hall. Tickets are still on sale!
