Nomeda Kazlauskaitė-Kazlaus to present an exceptional concert in Lithuania

On December 14th, the listeners at the Grand Hall of the Philharmonic will have a chance to hear the first Lithuanian performance of the second act from the opera Tristan and Isolde. It will be performed by Nomeda Kazlauskaitė-Kazlaus and a team of internationally acclaimed talents. This special concert is dedicated to the 200th birth anniversary of composer Richard Wagner and it also marks the ending of Lithuania’s presidency of the Council of the European Union. Patron of the concert – Prime minister of the Republic of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevičius.

“Richard Wagner is one of my favourite composers. The depth, grandeur and lyricism of his scores inspire the most elevated feelings, whenever I sing his music. He is the great genius of mankind and there is not a single unnecessary note in his music,“ says Kazlauskaitė-Kazlaus, a singer often dubbed “wagnerist” for her performances of diverse characters from composer’s operas. “Celebrating the anniversary of the composer I wanted to organise the first Lithuanian performance of one of his works. “

The prima donna has been the first performer of numerous works in Lithuania, including the Polish Requiem by Krzysztof Penderecki or Preziosilla in Verdi’s La Forza del Destino, so the upcoming concert was not a challenge to her. Opera Tristan and Isolde has been on the soloist’s mind for quite some time: Isolde’s aria was recorded on her debut solo album and she has performed it at various concerts abroad. N. Kazlauskaitė-Kazlaus says that it will be a great pleasure for her to perform the second act of the famous opera in Lithuania: “it is an endless duet of love, full of ecstasy, flight, passion, force and warmth. I believe this concert is going to be a nice Christmas present for the lovers of music.”

The concert features an international opera team brought together by Nomeda Kazlauskaitė-Kazlaus and it includes the renowned virtuosi of classical music. Tristan’s part will be performed by the British tenor Ian Storey, who is presently internationally regarded as the best performer of the character. He has appeared in tandem with Kazlauskaitė-Kazlaus in the past: their performance of Verdi’s Othello at the international opera festival Pergola 2008 in Wroclaw has received wide critical acclaim. Another star to appear at a concert at the Philharmonic is an Italian-born conductor Walter Attanasi, distinguished for his special sense of music and artistic expression.  According to Kazlauskaitė-Kazlaus, it is a great honour to welcome the guests of such calibre in a small country like Lithuania.

Isolde’s character is among the favourites of Kazlauskaitė-Kazlaus, along with Kundry from Wagner’s opera Parsifal. The soloist also became the first Lithuanian Brunhild in composer’s opera Valkyrie. For her performance of the character the singer was nominated for the Golden Cross of the Stage award in 2007. Brunhild is regarded as one of the most complex musical characters and Kazlauskaitė-Kazlaus has performed it over 15 times in Lithuania and abroad.

During the concert, the stage will be shared by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Kazlauskaitė-Kazlaus and other outstanding Lithuanian soloists: Vilhelma Mončytė (soprano), Liudas Norvaišas (bass), Mindaugas Jankauskas (tenor) and others.

The premiere performance of the second act of Richard Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolde will take place on December 14th, 7 pm, at the Grand Hall of the Philharmonic.
