Christmas Music Week: the classic cut with the festive lining

To highlight and give a special meaning to the approaching Christmas season, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society offers to meet the festive Holidays with the masterpieces of Western musical culture and invites to the concerts of the Christmas Music Week. From December 26th to 30th listeners of various ages and tastes will be presented with six different programmes to be performed at the National Philharmonic Hall.

Over the years, the central idea of the Christmas Music Week has been to deliver the message contained in the gospel in the universal language of music and the art of performance, shaped by different epochs and trends. The present series will be no exception in presenting the diversity of genies and styles: from the semi-staged family concerts to the classical orchestral performances, and from the chamber appearances, with the recognisable scent of French vocal delicacies, to the arrangements of pop, jazz and R&B music for the vocal ensemble.

The festive series includes two semi-staged performances (at 12 noon) for the entire family. The series open on December 26th, Saturday, with the appearance of the Ąžuoliukas Boys’ and Youth Choir under the direction of Vytautas Miškinis. Under its traditional header “On the Christmas Morning”, the choir will perform a selection of traditional Christmas carols from Europe and the U.S., accompanied by spoken interludes from actress Viktorija Kuodytė and backed by organist Bernardas Vasiliauskas and brass band Seniors. The following morning, December 27th, Sunday, the series will continue with the musical performance “The Carnival of the Animals” based on the like-named suite by Camille Saint-Saëns. The libretto for this performance was written by young Lithuanian author Laura Sintija Černiauskaitė and the stage production was conceived by Gintarė Radvilavičiūtė who is currently numbered among the most distinguished young Lithuanian artists, working in the puppet theatre. The production crew will include actors from the Klaipėda Puppet Theatre and musicians from the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra under Mindaugas Piečaitis, also featuring the Sonata and Rokas Zubovas Piano Duo.

The evening concerts (at 7 pm) of the Christmas Music Week will feature two chamber orchestras that will share the stage with guest soloists. On December 26th, Saturday, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra will appear together with its artistic director and soloist Sergej Krylov (violin), performing the ever popular music for solo violin and string orchestra by Haydn, Mozart and Vivaldi. On December 30th, Wednesday, the Camerata Klaipėda chamber orchestra, under its Artistic director violinist Vilhelmas Čepinskis, will make their annual appearance in the series with the programme “Evening Harmonies,” featuring works by Weber, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Schumann, Bruch, Vieuxtemps, Ysaÿe and Suk. For this programme the Orchestra invited violist Mikhail Bereznitsky from Russia.

The chamber section of the series will include two more concerts: on December 27th, Sunday, the programme of works by French romantic and impressionist composers will be performed by the Čiurlionis Quartet, soprano Kristina Zmailaitė and tenor Edmundas Seilius; and on December 29th, Tuesday, the public will meet again the male sextet Man Sound from the Ukraine, which will fill the National Philharmonic Hall with the sounds of pop, jazz and R&B compositions by George Benson and Al Jarreau, as well as jazz arrangements of Slavic folk songs.
