Janine Jansen and Maxim Rysanov to shine in Vilnius
The Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra concert that will take place on 28 April, 7 pm, is likely to become the key event of the 2009/2010 concert season at the National Philharmonic Hall. The stage will be shared by violinist Janine Jansen, recently dubbed ‘the queen of the downloads’ after a massive increase in the number of her records downloaded from iTunes, and violist Maxim Rysanov, named ‘Young Artist of the Year’ by major classical music magazine Gramophone a couple of years ago. At a concert in Vilnius, these elite string players will perform works by Schubert, Mozart and Bulgarian-born composer Dobrinka Tabakova, whose music famous American composer John Adams described as “extremely original and rare music.”

Finely chiselled classics
This Wednesday, two musical stars will cross at the concert of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra: an established conductor, Ronald Zollman, who, according to the critics, shapes the musical material with the skill of an Antique sculptor, and a rising star – violinist Anna Tifu, who will perform Mozart’s Third Violin Concerto, playing the violin crafted by 18th-century master Carlo Bergonzi. On April 14th, at 7pm, conducting the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra in its 50th anniversary series, Ronald Zollman with also present his interpretations of the scores by Joseph Haydn and Igor Stravinsky.

The Yellow River Concerto: politics, culture and style
On April 10th, Saturday, the orchestral music series will present a unique artefact – The Yellow River Piano Concerto – that emerged in China at the height of the Cultural Revolution, as a manifestation of the official socialist policy of the People’s Republic of China. This collective composition is one of the best internationally known Chinese works that combine Western music traditions with the elements of Chinese source materials. Never heard in Lithuania before, this piano concerto will be performed at the National Philharmonic Hall by Claudia Yang, a Malaysian-born pianist now based in Beijing, and the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under its second conductor Robertas Šervenikas.

An international competition to close Stasys Vainiūnas’ Centenary Celebrations
On April 1st and 2nd, the National Philharmonic Hall will celebrate the anniversary of pianist and composer Stasys Vainiūnas with the final events of the 6th International Stasys Vainiūnas Piano and Chamber Ensemble Competition. April 2nd is the actual birthday of this prominent Lithuanian post-war music figure and the closing concert of the competition at the National Philharmonic Hall will serve as a nice highlight of commemoration.

Two contemporaries who share the passion for music interpretation

Inaugurating the 50th anniversary year of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra
The Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra (LCO) is one of the most distinguished and internationally acclaimed Lithuanian orchestras. It was also one of the first Lithuanian collectives of classical musicians to appear abroad. Formed in 1960 by Prof. Saulius Sondeckis, the Orchestra, under its current artistic director violinist Sergej Krylov (from 2008), inaugurates its 50th anniversary year. Having made an introduction with two previous concerts this year, the Orchestra is to present four more orchestral programmes plus one family concert in the spring 2010. The 50th anniversary series open on March 6th, at 7 pm, at the National Philharmonic Hall.

The world famous soprano Sumi Jo to appear in the live recording session with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra
On February 28th, Sunday, at 3 pm, the National Philharmonic Hall awaits the guest appearance of the megastar of the contemporary opera world, Korean-born Sumi Jo, and one of the most internationally acclaimed young Japanese conductors, Tomomi Nishimoto, conducting the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO). 2010: A Chopin Odyssey at the National Philharmonic Hall
Paying a tribute to the 200th anniversary of Frédéric Chopin, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society offers the series of three evenings on February 20th, 24th and March 3rd, dedicated to three different hypostases of the great Polish composer: “Old Chopin,” “New Chopin” and “Juvenile Chopin.” Among the guest performers in this series are French pianist Philippe Giusiano, Lithuanian pianists Petras and Lukas Geniušas, AUKSO Chamber Orchestra, under its artistic director Marek Moś, and a small combo ensemble.

The Chanticleer returns to the National Philharmonic Hall to present the flowering seasons as the stages of life
The GRAMMY Award-winning male vocal ensemble from San Francisco continues its 32nd Season of 2009-10, during which more than 100 concerts are planned in 21 of the United States and 12 foreign countries, including appearances at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, Amsterdam 's Concertgebouw, Vienna's Musikverein, Prague's Rudolfinum and Expo 2010 in Shanghai. Danjulo Ishizaka: Dedicated to the sound behind the sound
“He is no longer just a talent, but a true musical personality,” wrote the largest German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung about young Japanese-born German cellist Danjulo Ishizaka who is to guest appear at the National Philharmonic Hall in Vilnius on January 30th. The coming Saturday, at 7 pm, together with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra under Robertas Šervenikas he will perform solo in works by Romantic composers, for which he feels affinity both as a person and an artist.

The Vilnius String Quartet to round off the series of its ‘musical conversations’ with pianists
With two concerts slated for December 2009, the Vilnius String Quartet is to put the finishing touches to its series of concerts titled String Quartet and the Piano, in which it has involved in refined and stylistically diverse ‘conversations’ with eleven pianists, starting from October 2008. Eduardas Balsys’ portrait concert to mark his 90th birth anniversary
The December 5th concert of the orchestral music series is dedicated to the 90th birth anniversary of composer Eduardas Balsys (1919–1984). This artist stands in the lead of the stylistic turning-point in Lithuanian music of the sixties and he had exerted tremendous influence upon the revival of Lithuanian music in post-Stalin era and its determined move towards modernity. The concert programme is comprised of the composer’s major instrumental works, marking the key turns in both his creative biography and in the history of Lithuanian national music.

Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra goes on Scandinavian tour
From 4 to 9 November, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra (LCO) and violinist Julian Rachlin will give five performances at major concert halls in Denmark (Copenhagen and Århus), Norway (Oslo) and Sweden (Stockholm and Örebro). Viva Musica Via Baltica: 913 kilometers of music
Viva Musica Via Baltica is an active platform for musical exchange, which focuses on the music and the art of musical performance thriving in the countries connected by the Via Baltica highway. The series of concerts presents the academic music cultures of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, as a result of collaboration between local concert institutions and their resident performers. The series will open on October 28th, Wednesday, at 7 pm and continue with certain intervals – as if repeating the distances between the capital cities connected by the Via Baltica highway – until December 12th. The Musica Humana Ensemble Builds a Link Between J.S.Bach and the Lithuanian music
The Musica Humana Ensemble and its artistic director Algirdas Vizgirda open their 35th anniversary season with the emblematic programme called “J.S.Bach and the Lithuanian music” and dedicate this concert to the Millennium of Lithuania’s name. On October 7th, at 7pm, together with a versatile team of the young soloists and joined by the Šiauliai State Chamber Choir Polifonija (that is also celebrating its 35th anniversary) the ensemble will premiere the works by Jurgis Juozapaitis and Osvaldas Balakauskas. Other works on the programme include some other choral pieces by Lithuanian composers and the breathtaking scores by Bach: the Concerto for two violins and the Magnificat. The National Philharmonic Season 2009/2010 abounds in concert series and special events
The Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society opens its 69th season. The season’s first half-year is comparable to a polyphonic setting, where various events are tightly woven into an exciting counterpoint of various concert series and festivals, most of which are marked with the emblems of the Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009 and the Millennium of Lithuania’s Name. During the coming three months the National Philharmonic will present around 60 concerts in Vilnius alone, which will encompass traditional Philharmonic concert series, events included in the national programmes and the 1st Vilnius Piano Music Festival, as well as various international and local collaboration projects.

Vilnius Festival hosted EFA General Assembly and Conference 2009
From 13 to 16 May, the European Festivals Association (EFA) held its General Assembly and Conference 2009 in Vilnius. Hosted by the Vilnius Festival, this year’s annual meetings formed an official part of Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009. Included in the agenda were the one-day conference “Artistic Trends in Festivals,” the launch of EFA BOOKS 4 “Dialogue,” as well as the election of the EFA president. The most important outcomes: The Association representing 110 arts festivals from 38 countries re-elected its current President Darko Brlek for a second four-year term and seven new members joined the Association.

Classical treasures and spellbinding performances to be presented at the Vilnius Festival 2009
April 21st a press conference was held, presenting the programme highlights of the Vilnius Festival 2009 and other related events. The current edition of the Festival, slated for May 13th–29th, is dedicated to Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009. Another, important focus of the festival is the paradigm of classical music – the diversity of its ideals, shapes, logic and intuition – mastered by the prominent figures in this area today who leave a distinct trace of their personality in every interpretation of classical heritage. Conductor Valery Gergiev and opera diva Violeta Urmana can be named as some of the central figures at this year’s festival.

For the first time, live on Mezzo TV channel from Vilnius: Michel Sogny Foundation Gala
On March 15th, 7 pm, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic invites to the gala concert of the young performers presented by the Michel Sogny Foundation SOS Talents. Seven pianists (10 to 19 years old) from Lithuania, Hungary, Georgia and Russia will appear both solo and with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra under Robertas Šervenikas, with which they will perform classical piano concertos. This gala will be broadcasted live on the French international channel for classical and jazz music Mezzo TV, with subscribers in 39 countries. This project is part of the Vilnius - European Capital of Culture 2009 programme for European arts.

The Chanticleer returns to the National Philharmonic Hall to present the flowering seasons as the stages of life
The GRAMMY Award-winning male vocal ensemble from San Francisco continues its 32nd Season of 2009-10, during which more than 100 concerts are planned in 21 of the United States and 12 foreign countries, including appearances at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, Amsterdam 's Concertgebouw, Vienna's Musikverein, Prague's Rudolfinum and Expo 2010 in Shanghai. “He is no longer just a talent, but a true musical personality,” wrote the largest German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung about young Japanese-born German cellist Danjulo Ishizaka who is to guest appear at the National Philharmonic Hall in Vilnius on January 30th. The Vilnius String Quartet to round off the series of its ‘musical conversations’ with pianists
With two concerts slated for December 2009, the Vilnius String Quartet is to put the finishing touches to its series of concerts titled String Quartet and the Piano, in which it has involved in refined and stylistically diverse ‘conversations’ with eleven pianists, starting from October 2008. Eduardas Balsys’ portrait concert to mark his 90th birth anniversary
The December 5th concert of the orchestral music series is dedicated to the 90th birth anniversary of composer Eduardas Balsys (1919–1984). This artist stands in the lead of the stylistic turning-point in Lithuanian music of the sixties and he had exerted tremendous influence upon the revival of Lithuanian music in post-Stalin era and its determined move towards modernity. The concert programme is comprised of the composer’s major instrumental works, marking the key turns in both his creative biography and in the history of Lithuanian national music.

Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra goes on Scandinavian tour

Viva Musica Via Baltica: 913 kilometers of music
Viva Musica Via Baltica is an active platform for musical exchange, which focuses on the music and the art of musical performance thriving in the countries connected by the Via Baltica highway. The series of concerts presents the academic music cultures of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, as a result of collaboration between local concert institutions and their resident performers. The Musica Humana Ensemble Builds a Link Between J.S.Bach and the Lithuanian music
The Musica Humana Ensemble and its artistic director Algirdas Vizgirda open their 35th anniversary season with the emblematic programme called “J.S.Bach and the Lithuanian music” and dedicate this concert to the Millennium of Lithuania’s name. The National Philharmonic Season 2009/2010 abounds in concert series and special events
The Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society opens its 69th season. The season’s first half-year is comparable to a polyphonic setting, where various events are tightly woven into an exciting counterpoint of various concert series and festivals, most of which are marked with the emblems of the Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009 and the Millennium of Lithuania’s Name. Vilnius Festival hosted EFA General Assembly and Conference 2009
From 13 to 16 May, the European Festivals Association (EFA) held its General Assembly and Conference 2009 in Vilnius. Hosted by the Vilnius Festival, this year’s annual meetings formed an official part of Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009. Included in the agenda were the one-day conference “Artistic Trends in Festivals,” the launch of EFA BOOKS 4 “Dialogue,” as well as the election of the EFA president. The most important outcomes: The Association representing 110 arts festivals from 38 countries re-elected its current President Darko Brlek for a second four-year term and seven new members joined the Association.

Classical treasures and spellbinding performances to be presented at the Vilnius Festival 2009
April 21st a press conference was held, presenting the programme highlights of the Vilnius Festival 2009 and other related events. The current edition of the Festival, slated for May 13th–29th, is dedicated to Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009. Another, important focus of the festival is the paradigm of classical music – the diversity of its ideals, shapes, logic and intuition – mastered by the prominent figures in this area today who leave a distinct trace of their personality in every interpretation of classical heritage. For the first time, live on Mezzo TV channel from Vilnius: Michel Sogny Foundation Gala
On March 15th, 7 pm, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic invites to the gala concert of the young performers presented by the Michel Sogny Foundation SOS Talents. Seven pianists (10 to 19 years old) from Lithuania, Hungary, Georgia and Russia will appear both solo and with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra under Robertas Šervenikas, with which they will perform classical piano concertos. This gala will be broadcasted live on the French international channel for classical and jazz music Mezzo TV, with subscribers in 39 countries. This project is part of the Vilnius - European Capital of Culture 2009 programme for European arts.
