Coming Saturday, on February 4, the orchestral music concert at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Hall will feature the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra together with an illustrious roster of guest performers: soprano Asta Krikščiūnaitė, who was recently named among the recipients of the 2011 Lithuanian National Arts and Culture Prize, the Kaunas State Choir, and French conductor Olivier Grangean who has made some unforgettable appearances in Vilnius in the past few years. Gathering Pace in Year 2012
Christmas and New Year concerts were followed by the period of seeming calm at the National Philharmonic Society. But this state will not last long. Special event concerts will soon open the gates to the year 2012. During January – February, the Philharmonic is planning to present more than 50 concert programmes in Vilnius alone. Another 8 programmes are going to take place in Trakai, as part of the traditional Music in Trakai Castle series. Each month, over a dozen programmes will be presented at different Lithuanian cities and towns as well.More

Will the warning siren close the Vilnius Festival?
The closing date of this year’s Vilnius Festival, June 14th, coincides with the Day of Mourning and Hope, marking the beginning of mass deportations by the Soviets in 1941. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of this sad occasion, the closing concert will feature a Requiem written by Lithuanian composer Vidmantas Bartulis in 1989. Performed a number of times and released on CD, this time the piece will be accompanied by specially produced visualisations.More

Rota conducts Rota: music and film at the Vilnius Festival
On June 9th, the Vilnius Festival presents an orchestral music concert “Rota Conducts Rota” dedicated to the birth centenary of Nino Rota, one of the best known Italian film composers. Under the baton of Marcello Rota, the composer’s nephew, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and two soloists – Slovenian soprano Sabina Cvilak and Lithuanian double bassist Donatas Bagurskas – present a retrospective, featuring Rota’s orchestral scores and fragments from the soundtracks for the films by Fellini, Zeffirelli and Coppola. Čiurlionis Quartet to pitch in the “Street Musicians Day”
On May 7th, at noon, the Čiurlionis Quartet will join the street musicians, participating in the annual Street Musicians Day. The Quartet will appear on the bridge above the Pasažo (Passage) lane, which connects two buildings of the National Philharmonic Society, and dedicate its performance to the centenary year of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. The approximate duration of their performance is 40 minutes. Depending on the weather conditions, this appearance may also take place under the arch on the same lane. Azerbaijan Capriccio in Vilnius

The closing date of this year’s Vilnius Festival, June 14th, coincides with the Day of Mourning and Hope, marking the beginning of mass deportations by the Soviets in 1941. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of this sad occasion, the closing concert will feature a Requiem written by Lithuanian composer Vidmantas Bartulis in 1989. Performed a number of times and released on CD, this time the piece will be accompanied by specially produced visualisations.

Rota conducts Rota: music and film at the Vilnius Festival
On June 9th, the Vilnius Festival presents an orchestral music concert “Rota Conducts Rota” dedicated to the birth centenary of Nino Rota, one of the best known Italian film composers. Under the baton of Marcello Rota, the composer’s nephew, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and two soloists – Slovenian soprano Sabina Cvilak and Lithuanian double bassist Donatas Bagurskas – present a retrospective, featuring Rota’s orchestral scores and fragments from the soundtracks for the films by Fellini, Zeffirelli and Coppola. These will be accompanied by the respective excerpts from the films.

Drums for the Kings
On June 6th, commemorating the National Day of Sweden and the 20th anniversary of re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Sweden, the Vilnius Festival will host a group of Swedish musicians who are also frequent guests at many important celebrations that take place in the court of H. M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden – the Kroumata Percussion Ensemble.

Bruno Canino, a living legend of Italian pianism, to make his first appearance in Lithuania
Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and its mercurial artistic director, violinist Sergej Krylov, are looking for diverse opportunities to liven up their repertoire and enrich the experience of challenging collaborations. This time Krylov invited his colleague Bruno Canino, a famed Italian pianist and composer, to share the stage at the Vilnius Festival on June 3rd.

Recital of David Geringas and Ian Fountain Duo and the world premiere
For 15 years, the Vilnius Festival has nourished the tradition of hosting cosy chamber music evenings and initiating the premieres of works by Lithuanian composers – this tradition will be carried on in one of the upcoming concerts. On June 2nd, the National Philharmonic presents a programme of works for cello and piano, to be performed by the unsurpassed master of the cello David Geringas (Germany) and pianist Ian Fountain (United Kingdom) – a performer renown for his technique and intellectual sophistication. The duo’s recital programme contains a surprise – the world premiere of a new piece by Vykintas Baltakas.

Each year, the orchestral music season of the National Philharmonic Hall closes with a spectacular evening of symphonic music. The closing concert of this season will take place on May 14th, 7pm, at the Main Auditorium of the National Philharmonic Hall, where the stage will be shared by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra (artistic director and principal conductor Juozas Domarkas) conducted by maestro Modestas Pitrėnas, soloist Vilhelmas Čepinskis (violin) and the Kaunas State Choir (artistic director and principal conductor Petras Bingelis).

Čiurlionis Quartet to pitch in the “Street Musicians Day”
On May 7th, at noon, the Čiurlionis Quartet will join the street musicians, participating in the annual Street Musicians Day. The Quartet will appear on the bridge above the Pasažo (Passage) lane, which connects two buildings of the National Philharmonic Society, and dedicate its performance to the centenary year of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. The approximate duration of their performance is 40 minutes. Depending on the weather conditions, this appearance may also take place under the arch on the same lane. The classical music potpourri performed in an unusual architectural setting could be right up your street! And it’s totally free of charge!

Azerbaijan Capriccio in Vilnius
On May 7th, at 7pm, the stage of the National Philharmonic Hall will be shared by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and the musicians from Azerbaijan. This concert is part of the Hazar-Baltic project. The objective of this project is to encourage the knowledge of Lithuanian and Azerbaijan culture within the European context and to stimulate the cultural exchange and mutual cooperation in the area of arts and science. In 2010, joint programmes of music performers and artistic organisations have begun in Lithuania and Azerbaijan. Organisers and partners of the project are the Lithuanian and Azerbaijan Embassies, Ministries of Culture and National Philharmonic Societies.

The return of violinist Dalia Dėdinskaitė and the world premiere by Arvydas Malcys
Maestro Juozas Domarkas and the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under his artistic leadership pursue their educational mission by collaborating with the young musicians. On April 30th, at 7pm, they will present talented Lithuanian violinist Dalia Dėdinskaitė who currently studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. The programme also features the world premiere of a new orchestral piece by Arvydas Malcys.

Coming with the vernal winds from Klaipėda and Switzerland
On April 27, Wednesday, at 7 pm, the National Philharmonic Hall will host guest performers from Klaipėda and Switzerland. The Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra under its artistic director Mindaugas Bačkus will accommodate itself on the philharmonic stage for the performance of the Schubert’s ever popular Death and the Maiden Quartet (version for string orchestra). It will also accompany the piano duo of Vilija Poškutė and Tomas Daukantas, two Lithuanian-born pianists who have made Switzerland their second home more than a decade ago.
