The Nordic Soundscapes of Finland
On March 5th, Saturday, at 7 pm, the National Philharmonic Hall invites to an evening of Finnish orchestral music which might be described as the show of tone painting. The programme presented by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under young Lithuanian conductor Dainius Pavilionis features works by the most prominent Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius, including tone poem Finlandia, the Violin Concerto in D minor and the Fifth Symphony. Violin solo will be performed by Petteri Iivonen, an emerging Finnish violin star and the 2nd prize winner of the 10th International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition in 2010.

Violinist Philippe Graffin returns to Vilnius to perform with the LCO
On February 26th, at 7 pm, the orchestral music series offers a programme prepared by one of the most acclaimed Lithuanian orchestras, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra (artistic director Sergej Krylov, patron Virginijus Strioga), conducted by Robertas Šervenikas and featuring a guest soloist in the person of violinist Philippe Graffin (France). Peter Laul to Make His Debut at the National Philharmonic Hall under the baton of Robertas Šervenikas Whose Eyes Are Set on London
On February 19th, at 7 pm, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra invites its listeners to the symphonic music evening at the National Philharmonic Hall, presenting a guest from Russia, pianist Peter Laul, who will perform Scriabin’s Piano Concerto. The orchestra, conducted by Robertas Šervenikas, will share the stage with opera singer Inesa Linaburgytė in the performance of Vytautas Laurušas’ Simphonia Latina for mezzo-soprano and orchestra. The orchestra’s musicians will demonstrate an exceptional technical excellence at the end of the concert, when they will perform the highly intricate music by Igor Stravinsky that few orchestras manage to perform with due technique: the programme features a suite comprised of the most characteristic pieces from his ballet Petrouchka.

O Man! Take heed! What says the deep midnight?
This Saturday, February, at 7 pm, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society will commemorate the death centenary of Gustavo Mahler (1860–1911) by giving a performance of his epic Third Symphony at the National Philharmonic Hall. The concert’s cast features a sizeable team of Lithuanian performers: the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under its principal conductor Juozas Domarkas will be augmented by Liepaitės and Ąžuoliukas choruses, as well as mezzo-soprano Laima Jonutytė.

The echoes of Arab culture to be broadcast live by Euroradio from Vilnius
The coming Saturday, February 5th, the Klasika programme of the Lithuanian Radio will invite the multi-million audience of the Euroradio to tune in and listen to the programme presented by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra especially for the “Arabesque” series presented by Euroradio. This concert will also feature Modestas Pitrėnas on the conductor’s podium and young singer Ona Kolobovaitė (soprano), performing solo with the orchestra.

A Glance at the Two Alleged Rivals – Mozart and Salieri
On January 29th, at 7 pm, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra will host Susanna Yoko Henkel, a gifted violinist of young generation who has already made her appearance with this orchestra in May 2008 and invited it to perform at the Zagreb Chamber Music Festival last autumn. Born into the family of Japanese and German musicians, she is often regarded the heiress of Anne-Sophie Mutter. The programme of the concert will feature works by the alleged (or actual?) rivals, Antonio Salieri and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

National Philharmonic Maintains the Tempo of its 70th Anniversary Events
Having chosen perpetuum mobile as a slogan for its 70th anniversary season, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society keeps up its pace and offers an intense calendar of events for the coming half-year. From January through May 2011 fifty seven different programmes are to be presented at various venues in Vilnius. Six new programmes will continue the Music in Trakai Castle series. Many repeat or specially prepared performances will be given in tows and villages across Lithuania. And what’s more, the residents of the Philharmonic will set out to tour abroad, as they did so in previous years.

Christmas Concerts at the National Philharmonic Hall
This Christmas is special for the National Philharmonic Society. 70 years ago, on December 25th, 1940, the first concert of the newly established Lithuanian Philharmonic Society took place. On December 18th, 2010, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under its artistic director and principal conductor Juozas Domarkas will celebrate its 70th Anniversary, together with its long-standing stage partners. Shortly thereafter, from December 26th to December 30th the National Philharmonic Hall invites to spend the holiday season with music at the Christmas Music Week series.

Reflections of the 18th and 20th centuries at a concert of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra
The Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra (LCO) continues its 50th anniversary series and presents yet another rendezvous with famous musicians. On November 6th, at 7pm, the orchestra will share the stage of the National Philharmonic Hall with pianist Povilas Stravinskas, who has made Seattle his home two decades ago and kept visiting Lithuania with regular appearances ever since then. Undergrowth Concerts continue to showcase young stars in the making
The National Philharmonic Society carries on with a unique tradition to give the big stage to the young musicians – our musical ‘undergrowth.’ This Sunday, October 10th, at 12 pm, the concert in the Undergrowth Series presents three twenty-year-olds, who have already demonstrated their fascinating abilities in many countries. The Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under young conductor Dainius Pavilionis will accompany violinist Agata Daraškaitė, cellist Justas Kulikauskas and pianist Motiejus Bazaras. The orchestra’s artistic director and principal conductor, Prof. Juozas Domarkas, will add his commentaries to this programme.

Piano Classics in the Hands of the Budding Talents
This weekend the piano classics will reign at the National Philharmonic Hall. No, no, not as part of some eagerly awaited piano competition or festival. As chance would have it, both Saturday and Sunday evenings are dedicated to the rising piano stars whose precocious talents have been noticed and developed by pianist, composer and teacher Michel Sogny, a Doctor of Philosophy and an honorary council of the Republic of Lithuania in Switzerland, whose name is already familiar to the Lithuanian audiences through his charitable foundation “SOS Talents” and the previous appearances of his scholarship students.

The orchestral music concert of September 18th will officially open the new anniversary season of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Hall. The Music in Trakai Castle Series to open its autumn season
Just before the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society will open its 70th Anniversary Season, the Music in Trakai Castle Series will resume its Sunday afternoon (4pm) concerts at the Great Hall of Trakai Island Castle, starting from September 12th. Under the gothic domes of the medieval castle, the programmes of Classical and Romantic, improvised and vocal music, early music and dance will be presented by prominent Lithuanian music ensembles and dance companies, singers and instrumentalists. Seven concerts are planned to take place at Trakai Island Castle during the first half of the Philharmonic Anniversary Season 2010/2011.

East and West will meet at the closing concert of the Vilnius Festival

It is a lasting tradition of the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO) under conductor Juozas Domarkas to round off the last concert of the season with this dynamic masterpiece that reveals colours of the orchestra in its full variety. Janine Jansen and Maxim Rysanov to shine in Vilnius
The Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra concert that will take place on 28 April, 7 pm, is likely to become the key event of the 2009/2010 concert season at the National Philharmonic Hall. The Yellow River Concerto: politics, culture and style
On April 10th, Saturday, the orchestral music series will present a unique artefact – The Yellow River Piano Concerto – that emerged in China at the height of the Cultural Revolution, as a manifestation of the official socialist policy of the People’s Republic of China. This collective composition is one of the best internationally known Chinese works that combine Western music traditions with the elements of Chinese source materials. Never heard in Lithuania before, this piano concerto will be performed at the National Philharmonic Hall by Claudia Yang, a Malaysian-born pianist now based in Beijing, and the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under its second conductor Robertas Šervenikas.

An international competition to close Stasys Vainiūnas’ Centenary Celebrations

Piano Classics in the Hands of the Budding Talents
This weekend the piano classics will reign at the National Philharmonic Hall. No, no, not as part of some eagerly awaited piano competition or festival. As chance would have it, both Saturday and Sunday evenings are dedicated to the rising piano stars whose precocious talents have been noticed and developed by pianist, composer and teacher Michel Sogny, a Doctor of Philosophy and an honorary council of the Republic of Lithuania in Switzerland, whose name is already familiar to the Lithuanian audiences through his charitable foundation “SOS Talents” and the previous appearances of his scholarship students.

The Music in Trakai Castle Series to open its autumn season
Just before the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society will open its 70th Anniversary Season, the Music in Trakai Castle Series will resume its Sunday afternoon (4pm) concerts at the Great Hall of Trakai Island Castle, starting from September 12th. Under the gothic domes of the medieval castle, the programmes of Classical and Romantic, improvised and vocal music, early music and dance will be presented by prominent Lithuanian music ensembles and dance companies, singers and instrumentalists. Seven concerts are planned to take place at Trakai Island Castle during the first half of the Philharmonic Anniversary Season 2010/2011.

East and West will meet at the closing concert of the Vilnius Festival

Closing of the orchestral music season to the rhythm of bolero
Boléro by Maurice Ravel, one of the most popular 20th century pieces for symphony orchestra, will close the orchestral music season at the National Philharmonic Hall on 8 May, at 7pm. It is a lasting tradition of the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO) under conductor Juozas Domarkas to round off the last concert of the season with this dynamic masterpiece that reveals colours of the orchestra in its full variety. The programme of this festive orchestral music concert will consist entirely of the 20th century music, including works by Antanas Rekašius, Albert Roussel and Jean Sibelius. Young and already internationally recognised Moldovan violinist Ilian Gârnet will join the orchestra in the performance of Sibelius Violin Concerto.

Janine Jansen and Maxim Rysanov to shine in Vilnius
The Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra concert that will take place on 28 April, 7 pm, is likely to become the key event of the 2009/2010 concert season at the National Philharmonic Hall. The stage will be shared by violinist Janine Jansen, recently dubbed ‘the queen of the downloads’ after a massive increase in the number of her records downloaded from iTunes, and violist Maxim Rysanov, named ‘Young Artist of the Year’ by major classical music magazine Gramophone a couple of years ago. This Wednesday, two musical stars will cross at the concert of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra: an established conductor, Ronald Zollman, who, according to the critics, shapes the musical material with the skill of an Antique sculptor, and a rising star – violinist Anna Tifu, who will perform Mozart’s Third Violin Concerto, playing the violin crafted by 18th-century master Carlo Bergonzi. The Yellow River Concerto: politics, culture and style
On April 10th, Saturday, the orchestral music series will present a unique artefact – The Yellow River Piano Concerto – that emerged in China at the height of the Cultural Revolution, as a manifestation of the official socialist policy of the People’s Republic of China. This collective composition is one of the best internationally known Chinese works that combine Western music traditions with the elements of Chinese source materials. Never heard in Lithuania before, this piano concerto will be performed at the National Philharmonic Hall by Claudia Yang, a Malaysian-born pianist now based in Beijing, and the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under its second conductor Robertas Šervenikas.
