VILNIUS FESTIVAL 2011: seven evenings ushering in the summer season
This year the 15th Vilnius Festival will usher in the musical summer season with seven concerts to be presented at the National Philharmonic Hall and the National Opera and Ballet theatre in Vilnius from May 31st to June 14th. An illustrious crew of the internationally acclaimed Lithuanian and foreign musicians will demonstrate breathtaking musicianship and technical brilliance in diverse orchestral and chamber music programmes. One hundred years after Čiurlionis
On April 10th, 2011, we will commemorate the death centenary of MIKALOJUS KONSTANTINAS ČIURLIONIS (22 September 1875 – 10 April 1911). One hundred years after his death, the phenomenon of Čiurlionis remains as fascinating as ever before: it rouses curiosity mainly due two the twofold nature of his artistic talent. His work as a composer and progenitor of Lithuanian professional music savours of the cultural atmosphere of the beginning of the 20th century in Lithuania, Poland, Germany and Russia, where he lived during various periods of his life. Meet the enthusiasts of contemporary music: the ASCH Trio
On April 2nd, at 7 pm, the appearance of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra will feature three acclaimed soloists – violinist Roman Mints, violist Maxim Rysanov and cellist Kristine Blaumane. All three had studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and now perform all over the world. Violinist Rūta Lipinaitytė and conductor Aleksandar Markovič return to the National Philharmonic Hall in Vilnius
On March 26th, Saturday, at 7 pm, the National Philharmonic Hall offers an orchestral music concert and presents two young artists who are currently building successful careers on the European music scene: conductor Aleksandar Markovič and violinist Rūta Lipinaitytė. Orchestral Music Concert and Two Capital M’s
On March 12th, 7pm, the National Philharmonic invites to a Saturday orchestral music concert. The stage will be shared by the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and emerging musical stars, including the Latvian pianist Lauma Skridė, rapidly gaining international acclaim and two prize winners of international competitions: harpsichordist Vaiva Eidukaitytė-Storastienė and the final year pupil at the Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis School of Arts, a harpist Aistė Baliunytė. The concert will be conducted by Ronald Zollman, a Belgian conductor already familiar to the Lithuanian audiences. The Nordic Soundscapes of Finland
On March 5th, Saturday, at 7 pm, the National Philharmonic Hall invites to an evening of Finnish orchestral music which might be described as the show of tone painting. The programme presented by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under young Lithuanian conductor Dainius Pavilionis features works by the most prominent Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius, including tone poem Finlandia, the Violin Concerto in D minor and the Fifth Symphony. Violin solo will be performed by Petteri Iivonen, an emerging Finnish violin star and the 2nd prize winner of the 10th International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition in 2010. MoreMore

Violinist Philippe Graffin returns to Vilnius to perform with the LCO
On February 26th, at 7 pm, the orchestral music series offers a programme prepared by one of the most acclaimed Lithuanian orchestras, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra (artistic director Sergej Krylov, patron Virginijus Strioga), conducted by Robertas Šervenikas and featuring a guest soloist in the person of violinist Philippe Graffin (France). Peter Laul to Make His Debut at the National Philharmonic Hall under the baton of Robertas Šervenikas Whose Eyes Are Set on London
On February 19th, at 7 pm, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra invites its listeners to the symphonic music evening at the National Philharmonic Hall, presenting a guest from Russia, pianist Peter Laul, who will perform Scriabin’s Piano Concerto. The orchestra, conducted by Robertas Šervenikas, will share the stage with opera singer Inesa Linaburgytė in the performance of Vytautas Laurušas’ Simphonia Latina for mezzo-soprano and orchestra. The orchestra’s musicians will demonstrate an exceptional technical excellence at the end of the concert, when they will perform the highly intricate music by Igor Stravinsky that few orchestras manage to perform with due technique: the programme features a suite comprised of the most characteristic pieces from his ballet Petrouchka. O Man! Take heed! What says the deep midnight?
This Saturday, February, at 7 pm, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society will commemorate the death centenary of Gustavo Mahler (1860–1911) by giving a performance of his epic Third Symphony at the National Philharmonic Hall. The concert’s cast features a sizeable team of Lithuanian performers: the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under its principal conductor Juozas Domarkas will be augmented by Liepaitės and Ąžuoliukas choruses, as well as mezzo-soprano Laima Jonutytė. The echoes of Arab culture to be broadcast live by Euroradio from Vilnius
The coming Saturday, February 5th, the Klasika programme of the Lithuanian Radio will invite the multi-million audience of the Euroradio to tune in and listen to the programme presented by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra especially for the “Arabesque” series presented by Euroradio. A Glance at the Two Alleged Rivals – Mozart and Salieri
On January 29th, at 7 pm, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra will host Susanna Yoko Henkel, a gifted violinist of young generation who has already made her appearance with this orchestra in May 2008 and invited it to perform at the Zagreb Chamber Music Festival last autumn. Born into the family of Japanese and German musicians, she is often regarded the heiress of Anne-Sophie Mutter. National Philharmonic Maintains the Tempo of its 70th Anniversary Events
Having chosen perpetuum mobile as a slogan for its 70th anniversary season, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society keeps up its pace and offers an intense calendar of events for the coming half-year. From January through May 2011 fifty seven different programmes are to be presented at various venues in Vilnius. Six new programmes will continue the Music in Trakai Castle series. Many repeat or specially prepared performances will be given in tows and villages across Lithuania. Christmas Concerts at the National Philharmonic Hall
This Christmas is special for the National Philharmonic Society. 70 years ago, on December 25th, 1940, the first concert of the newly established Lithuanian Philharmonic Society took place. Reflections of the 18th and 20th centuries at a concert of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra
The Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra (LCO) continues its 50th anniversary series and presents yet another rendezvous with famous musicians. On November 6th, at 7pm, the orchestra will share the stage of the National Philharmonic Hall with pianist Povilas Stravinskas, who has made Seattle his home two decades ago and kept visiting Lithuania with regular appearances ever since then. The Music in Trakai Castle Series to open its autumn season
Just before the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society will open its 70th Anniversary Season, the Music in Trakai Castle Series will resume its Sunday afternoon (4pm) concerts at the Great Hall of Trakai Island Castle, starting from September 12th.
