The 2nd Vilnius Piano Music Festival Begins
The programme of the 2nd Vilnius Piano Music Festival (November 9–26) brings a distinct colour into the varicoloured kaleidoscope of events to be held at the Main Auditorium of the National Philharmonic Hall this autumn. The second edition of the festival is dedicated to the 200th Anniversary of Franz Liszt and also commemorates the centenary of death of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. The programme initiated by the festival’s artistic director Mūza Rubackytė features nine piano music concerts: from recitals to luxuriant piano and orchestra music evenings, presenting the audiences with the appearances of the celebrated Lithuanian and foreign pianists, as well as the rising stars of the piano music world.

From September 2010 through May 2011 the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society celebrated its 70th Anniversary Season. The perpetual flow of season’s musical events (the anniversary slogan was aptly styled as ‘perpetuum mobile’) has been accompanied by various celebratory occasions, as well as by the newly conceived series of recordings. Will the warning siren close the Vilnius Festival?
The closing date of this year’s Vilnius Festival, June 14th, coincides with the Day of Mourning and Hope, marking the beginning of mass deportations by the Soviets in 1941. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of this sad occasion, the closing concert will feature a Requiem written by Lithuanian composer Vidmantas Bartulis in 1989. Performed a number of times and released on CD, this time the piece will be accompanied by specially produced visualisations.

Rota conducts Rota: music and film at the Vilnius Festival
On June 9th, the Vilnius Festival presents an orchestral music concert “Rota Conducts Rota” dedicated to the birth centenary of Nino Rota, one of the best known Italian film composers. Under the baton of Marcello Rota, the composer’s nephew, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and two soloists – Slovenian soprano Sabina Cvilak and Lithuanian double bassist Donatas Bagurskas – present a retrospective, featuring Rota’s orchestral scores and fragments from the soundtracks for the films by Fellini, Zeffirelli and Coppola. These will be accompanied by the respective excerpts from the films.

Čiurlionis Quartet to pitch in the “Street Musicians Day”
On May 7th, at noon, the Čiurlionis Quartet will join the street musicians, participating in the annual Street Musicians Day. The Quartet will appear on the bridge above the Pasažo (Passage) lane, which connects two buildings of the National Philharmonic Society, and dedicate its performance to the centenary year of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. The approximate duration of their performance is 40 minutes. Depending on the weather conditions, this appearance may also take place under the arch on the same lane. The classical music potpourri performed in an unusual architectural setting could be right up your street! And it’s totally free of charge!

Azerbaijan Capriccio in Vilnius
On May 7th, at 7pm, the stage of the National Philharmonic Hall will be shared by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and the musicians from Azerbaijan. This concert is part of the Hazar-Baltic project. The objective of this project is to encourage the knowledge of Lithuanian and Azerbaijan culture within the European context and to stimulate the cultural exchange and mutual cooperation in the area of arts and science. In 2010, joint programmes of music performers and artistic organisations have begun in Lithuania and Azerbaijan. Orchestral Music Concert and Two Capital M’s
On March 12th, 7pm, the National Philharmonic invites to a Saturday orchestral music concert. The stage will be shared by the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and emerging musical stars, including the Latvian pianist Lauma Skridė, rapidly gaining international acclaim and two prize winners of international competitions: harpsichordist Vaiva Eidukaitytė-Storastienė and the final year pupil at the Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis School of Arts, a harpist Aistė Baliunytė. The concert will be conducted by Ronald Zollman, a Belgian conductor already familiar to the Lithuanian audiences. The programme features music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the works by Frank Martin, a composer, whose pieces are rarely performed in Lithuania.

The Nordic Soundscapes of Finland
On March 5th, Saturday, at 7 pm, the National Philharmonic Hall invites to an evening of Finnish orchestral music which might be described as the show of tone painting. The programme presented by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under young Lithuanian conductor Dainius Pavilionis features works by the most prominent Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius, including tone poem Finlandia, the Violin Concerto in D minor and the Fifth Symphony. Peter Laul to Make His Debut at the National Philharmonic Hall under the baton of Robertas Šervenikas Whose Eyes Are Set on London
On February 19th, at 7 pm, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra invites its listeners to the symphonic music evening at the National Philharmonic Hall, presenting a guest from Russia, pianist Peter Laul, who will perform Scriabin’s Piano Concerto. The orchestra, conducted by Robertas Šervenikas, will share the stage with opera singer Inesa Linaburgytė in the performance of Vytautas Laurušas’ Simphonia Latina for mezzo-soprano and orchestra. The orchestra’s musicians will demonstrate an exceptional technical excellence at the end of the concert, when they will perform the highly intricate music by Igor Stravinsky that few orchestras manage to perform with due technique: the programme features a suite comprised of the most characteristic pieces from his ballet Petrouchka.

Recital of David Geringas and Ian Fountain Duo and the world premiere
For 15 years, the Vilnius Festival has nourished the tradition of hosting cosy chamber music evenings and initiating the premieres of works by Lithuanian composers – this tradition will be carried on in one of the upcoming concerts. On June 2nd, the National Philharmonic presents a programme of works for cello and piano, to be performed by the unsurpassed master of the cello David Geringas (Germany) and pianist Ian Fountain (United Kingdom) – a performer renown for his technique and intellectual sophistication. The duo’s recital programme contains a surprise – the world premiere of a new piece by Vykintas Baltakas.

Vadim Repin and his welcoming “Bonjour” for the opening of the Vilnius Festival

An exquisite bouquet of musical moods for the closing of the season 2010/2011
Each year, the orchestral music season of the National Philharmonic Hall closes with a spectacular evening of symphonic music. The closing concert of this season will take place on May 14th, 7pm, at the Main Auditorium of the National Philharmonic Hall, where the stage will be shared by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra (artistic director and principal conductor Juozas Domarkas) conducted by maestro Modestas Pitrėnas, soloist Vilhelmas Čepinskis (violin) and the Kaunas State Choir (artistic director and principal conductor Petras Bingelis).

Čiurlionis Quartet to pitch in the “Street Musicians Day”
On May 7th, at noon, the Čiurlionis Quartet will join the street musicians, participating in the annual Street Musicians Day. The Quartet will appear on the bridge above the Pasažo (Passage) lane, which connects two buildings of the National Philharmonic Society, and dedicate its performance to the centenary year of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. The approximate duration of their performance is 40 minutes. Depending on the weather conditions, this appearance may also take place under the arch on the same lane. The classical music potpourri performed in an unusual architectural setting could be right up your street! And it’s totally free of charge!

Azerbaijan Capriccio in Vilnius
On May 7th, at 7pm, the stage of the National Philharmonic Hall will be shared by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and the musicians from Azerbaijan. This concert is part of the Hazar-Baltic project. The objective of this project is to encourage the knowledge of Lithuanian and Azerbaijan culture within the European context and to stimulate the cultural exchange and mutual cooperation in the area of arts and science. In 2010, joint programmes of music performers and artistic organisations have begun in Lithuania and Azerbaijan. Organisers and partners of the project are the Lithuanian and Azerbaijan Embassies, Ministries of Culture and National Philharmonic Societies.

The return of violinist Dalia Dėdinskaitė and the world premiere by Arvydas Malcys
Maestro Juozas Domarkas and the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under his artistic leadership pursue their educational mission by collaborating with the young musicians. On April 30th, at 7pm, they will present talented Lithuanian violinist Dalia Dėdinskaitė who currently studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. The programme also features the world premiere of a new orchestral piece by Arvydas Malcys.

Coming with the vernal winds from Klaipėda and Switzerland
On April 27, Wednesday, at 7 pm, the National Philharmonic Hall will host guest performers from Klaipėda and Switzerland. The Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra under its artistic director Mindaugas Bačkus will accommodate itself on the philharmonic stage for the performance of the Schubert’s ever popular Death and the Maiden Quartet (version for string orchestra). It will also accompany the piano duo of Vilija Poškutė and Tomas Daukantas, two Lithuanian-born pianists who have made Switzerland their second home more than a decade ago.

This year the 15th Vilnius Festival will usher in the musical summer season with seven concerts to be presented at the National Philharmonic Hall and the National Opera and Ballet theatre in Vilnius from May 31st to June 14th. An illustrious crew of the internationally acclaimed Lithuanian and foreign musicians will demonstrate breathtaking musicianship and technical brilliance in diverse orchestral and chamber music programmes. Meet the enthusiasts of contemporary music: the ASCH Trio
On April 2nd, at 7 pm, the appearance of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra will feature three acclaimed soloists – violinist Roman Mints, violist Maxim Rysanov and cellist Kristine Blaumane. All three had studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and now perform all over the world. In 1999, they have formed the ASCH Trio dedicated to the performance of contemporary music.

Violinist Rūta Lipinaitytė and conductor Aleksandar Markovič return to the National Philharmonic Hall in Vilnius
On March 26th, Saturday, at 7 pm, the National Philharmonic Hall offers an orchestral music concert and presents two young artists who are currently building successful careers on the European music scene: conductor Aleksandar Markovič and violinist Rūta Lipinaitytė. The programme features music by Witold Lutosławski, Sergei Prokofiev and Hungarian composer Miklós Rózsa, whose music is rarely performed in Lithuania.

Orchestral Music Concert and Two Capital M’s
On March 12th, 7pm, the National Philharmonic invites to a Saturday orchestral music concert. The stage will be shared by the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and emerging musical stars, including the Latvian pianist Lauma Skridė, rapidly gaining international acclaim and two prize winners of international competitions: harpsichordist Vaiva Eidukaitytė-Storastienė and the final year pupil at the Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis School of Arts, a harpist Aistė Baliunytė. The concert will be conducted by Ronald Zollman, a Belgian conductor already familiar to the Lithuanian audiences. The programme features music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the works by Frank Martin, a composer, whose pieces are rarely performed in Lithuania.

The Nordic Soundscapes of Finland
On March 5th, Saturday, at 7 pm, the National Philharmonic Hall invites to an evening of Finnish orchestral music which might be described as the show of tone painting. The programme presented by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under young Lithuanian conductor Dainius Pavilionis features works by the most prominent Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius, including tone poem Finlandia, the Violin Concerto in D minor and the Fifth Symphony. Violin solo will be performed by Petteri Iivonen, an emerging Finnish violin star and the 2nd prize winner of the 10th International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition in 2010.

Violinist Philippe Graffin returns to Vilnius to perform with the LCO
On February 26th, at 7 pm, the orchestral music series offers a programme prepared by one of the most acclaimed Lithuanian orchestras, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra (artistic director Sergej Krylov, patron Virginijus Strioga), conducted by Robertas Šervenikas and featuring a guest soloist in the person of violinist Philippe Graffin (France). Peter Laul to Make His Debut at the National Philharmonic Hall under the baton of Robertas Šervenikas Whose Eyes Are Set on London
On February 19th, at 7 pm, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra invites its listeners to the symphonic music evening at the National Philharmonic Hall, presenting a guest from Russia, pianist Peter Laul, who will perform Scriabin’s Piano Concerto. The orchestra, conducted by Robertas Šervenikas, will share the stage with opera singer Inesa Linaburgytė in the performance of Vytautas Laurušas’ Simphonia Latina for mezzo-soprano and orchestra. The orchestra’s musicians will demonstrate an exceptional technical excellence at the end of the concert, when they will perform the highly intricate music by Igor Stravinsky that few orchestras manage to perform with due technique: the programme features a suite comprised of the most characteristic pieces from his ballet Petrouchka.

O Man! Take heed! What says the deep midnight?
This Saturday, February, at 7 pm, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society will commemorate the death centenary of Gustavo Mahler (1860–1911) by giving a performance of his epic Third Symphony at the National Philharmonic Hall. The concert’s cast features a sizeable team of Lithuanian performers: the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra under its principal conductor Juozas Domarkas will be augmented by Liepaitės and Ąžuoliukas choruses, as well as mezzo-soprano Laima Jonutytė.

The echoes of Arab culture to be broadcast live by Euroradio from Vilnius
The coming Saturday, February 5th, the Klasika programme of the Lithuanian Radio will invite the multi-million audience of the Euroradio to tune in and listen to the programme presented by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra especially for the “Arabesque” series presented by Euroradio. This concert will also feature Modestas Pitrėnas on the conductor’s podium and young singer Ona Kolobovaitė (soprano), performing solo with the orchestra.
