Part of the VILNIUS FESTIVAL 2011

The 15th Vilnius Festival opens with an orchestral performance, featuring the world-celebrated star of the violin, Vadim Repin, and the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra under its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Gintaras Rinkevičius.
Having made fiery passion with impeccable technique, poetry and sensitivity his unmistakable trademarks, Repin is often mentioned among his great predecessors in the metier, such as Yehudi Menuhin, Isaac Stern, Jascha Heifetz and David Oistrakh. At the same time, the critics note: “his incredible technique, infallible exactness and his tone that seems to come from nowhere do
distinguish him even from these legends...” (Le Monde, 2001) Tonight the famed violinist will perform Édouard Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole – a virtuoso showpiece, enthralling with dance rhythms and elegiac sadness.
The concert’s programme will open with the Poème électrique written by Lithuanian-born modernist Vytautas Bacevičius in 1932, while the second half of the concert will be dedicated to a monumental score of the First Symphony (1896) by Sergei Rachmaninov.
