Often referred to as the “Dostoyevsky in music,” Russian pianist Grigory Sokolov is considered by many today as the living legend of pianism. More than forty years ago the 16-year-old was awarded the first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow. Sokolov has gained an almost mythical status amongst music-lovers and pianophiles throughout the world. His poetic and highly individual interpretations, rhythmic freedom and elasticity of phrasing, temperate use of pedal and thus superior finger-work, spontaneous imagination and magical control of line are perhaps unequalled among pianists today. But all this magic has its earthly roots: Sokolov knows more about a Steinway than many piano technicians. He likes to capture the sacred moments of a real, live concert and avoid the sterile atmosphere of a studio.
