The Lithuanian piano phenomenon Petras and his heir Lukas Geniušas are inviting to a piano tour de force rather than a family music making. Their target is primordial force of Le Sacre du Printemps and density of Chopin’s Etudes. Composed in 1829–1836, the 24 Etudes (performed by Lukas Geniušas) have set up a new system of piano technique, which marked a radical turning point in the history of piano. On the other hand, extremely difficult Etudes embodied not only technological revolution, but also changed the status of the genre transforming ‘emotionally meaningless’ finger exercises into a form of artistic expression. Stravinsky’s score (featuring both pianists) stems from totally different realm. Equally challenging opus displays primeval elements, primitive and asymmetric rhythms, and intricate music fabric interwoven with melodic phrases.
