Tonight’s soloist and conductor Sasha Rozhdestvensky, an offspring of musicians (his father – conductor Genady Rozhdestvensky), singles-out among Russia’s young string players. Yehudi Menuhin named him “one of the most talented and subtle violinists of his generation”. Touring around the world Rozhdestvensky plays several violins including Guarneri del Gesu and Stradivari, both on loan from the Stradivari Society whose ambassador he has recently become. Rozhdestvensky’s repertoire embraces works from different epochs – from Bach and Vivaldi to Gubaidulina, Schnittke and Berio. Tonight he performs opuses by Bach and A. Pärt. The latter’s Fratres represents the composer’s tintinnabuli style (tintinnabuli – description of the sound of bells). The concert programme also features Haydn’s Symphony No 88 in G major and A. Martinaitis’ Concerto for tenor, flute, oboe, harpsichord and strings Musical Offering.
