Part of the MUSIC IN TRAKAI CASTLE series

In their programme, the Čiurlionis Quartet and mezzo-soprano Judita Leitaitė combine string quartets by Viennese classics and vocal music genres from various epochs and Western cultures. Along with German Lied (Mozart), 18th c. French pastoral songs (Weckerlin), tunes from musical film (Legrand), aria from American operetta (Kern) and popular song (Foster) the performers offer classical string quartets by Haydn and Mozart. Kaiser quartet from Haydn’s cycle of six quartets dedicated to Hungarian Count Joseph Erdödy departs from the expected sonata form and concentrates on the thematic homogeneity in a seamless fabric of motivic dialogues between the instruments (the quartet’s claim to fame was the second movement’s theme – the anthem God Save the Emperor Franz today known as a national anthem of Germany). Dissonance quartet (its title was conditioned by the slow and charged introduction in which the pulsating cello line becomes a root for harmony of unresolved dissonances) from Mozart’s six quartets dedicated to Haydn erased the separation between the “old style” polyphonic counterpoint (with strictly independent voices) and simplicity of melody and accompaniment of the “new style” (with hierarchy of separate voices).
