JOSEPH HAYDN – Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze for string quartet, Hob. XX : 1a
Texts from book “Seven Words” by Vytautas Antanas Dambrava recited by Rev. ARŪNAS PEŠKAITIS.
Haydn wrote this work in 1785 for Good Friday’s liturgy. The opus was planed as seven-movement work with dying Christ’s commandments read and commented by a bishop. Music had to reinforce the emotional impact of each “word.” Haydn composed seven sonatas for orchestra with introduction and finale. Soon after, Haydn transcribed the cycle for string quartet. Almost simultaneously the piano transcription was published. Ten years later the composer reworked the composition into oratorio for soloists, choir and orchestra.
