ASTOR PIAZZOLLA – sung tangos, fragments from the tango operita Maria de Buenos Aires
Part of the FAMILY SERIES
St. Valentine's Day marks the triumph of a love dance – tango! Its cradle is Argentina. In the middle of the 19th century native peasants as well as foreigners started settling in the outskirts of Buenos Aires. This melting pot of cultures was home to the most diverse music: Argentinean milonga and Afro-American candombe, Spanish and Cuban habanera and various European dances. Then the multicultural tango was born. Bandoneon (a type of accordion) and strings lent it a unique flavour. “What’s Astor Piazzolla’s legacy? Do we have anything more profound than those emotionally charged compositions?” asked violinist G. Kremer, the celebrated performer of Piazzolla’s tangos. The audience will be steeped in sung tango emotions, while in the episodes from tango operita the listeners will meet its protagonist Maria. Her character will be moulded by passionate dance rhythms delicately intertwining with the elements of jazz and classical music.
