Part of the FAMILY SERIES
Anton Rubinstein, the eminent Russian composer, pianist, teacher and public figure, often joked about the incongruence between what the public and artists think of art. The public usually thinks: “Life is a serious thing, while art is merry.” The artist thinks the other way round: “How merry is life and how strict is art.”
Veronika Povilionienė, a fosterer of folk song, will share the stage with the performers of different genres: the Čiurlionis Quartet, always appreciated for creating amiable ambiance, Saulius Balandis, a popular theatre and movie actor, who recently has often been joining the singer on stage, and Arvydas Kirda, a virtuoso bandoneonist.
What is bandoneon, by the way? We will see and hear the instrument with the bellows, similar to the accordion, invented by the German master Heinrich Band in the 19th century. Bandoneon has been played in Lithuania, particularly in Samogitia, for more than 100 years. It is entertaining to listen to the solo bandoneon, but so much more to hear several of them playing together. Bandoneon is often used in folk instrument ensembles where it enjoys great popularity.
