Part of the series MUSIC IN TRAKAI CASTLE

In four decades the Vilnius String Quartet has assembled a huge chamber music repertoire. The ensemble is well known and received around the world. It has fascinated audiences in major concert halls in Europe and the US, represented Lithuanian music culture in prestigious international festivals in Austria, Luxemburg, Italy, Germany, France, UK, the USA and Mexico. In 2003, The New York Times critic was enchanted with the Quartet’s artistry. “…absolute music and Beethoven’s spiritual depth was conveyed with deep trepidation”, wrote Luxemburger Wort in 2004. Memorable were the Quartet’s concerts with Tatyana Nikolayeva, Mikhail Pletnev, David Geringas, Yuri Bashmet, Mūza Rubackytė and other eminent soloists. The listeners will never forget the Quartet’s concert series Complete Quartets by L. van Beethoven, Mozart and Vienna, etc.

In this programme the Vilnius String Quartet appears with Judita Leitaitė, a winner of international competitions and one of the most celebrated chamber music performers in Lithuania. She earned accolades in festivals in Poland, Denmark, London, Sankt Petersburg and Stockholm. She became the Summer Star of Newport Music Festival (USA). “The North American debut of the Lithuanian mezzo-soprano Judita Leitaitė was greeted by thunderous ovations,” wrote Newport festival newspaper Newport this week. She mesmerized Swedish audiences with the beauty of her voice and her suggestive performance. For contributions to Lithuanian culture J. Leitaitė was decorated with the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Vytautas the Great (2004) and was awarded the Government’s Culture and Art Prize (2005). She has been collaborating with the Vilnius String Quartet for many years including appearance in the Quartet’s anniversary programmes, and numerous concerts throughout Lithuania.
