One of the oldest institutions of its kind in the former Soviet Union, the Belarusian State Academic Symphony Orchestra was founded in April 1927. Ilya Mussin, who later became the celebrity of the famous Sankt Petersburg conducting school, took the leadership of the Orchestra. It was also conducted by Mussin disciples Valery Gergiev and Yuri Temirkanov and has performed with the leading soloists of the 20th century, such as Oistrakh, Richter, Rostropovich, Gilels, Kogan, Menuhin, Stern, Ashkenazy,  Vishnevskaya, Gutman, Kremer, Maisky.

The Orchestra performs under the baton of Maestro Alexander Anissimov, who in 2001 was appointed the Chief Conductor of the Orchestra and under whose leadership the Orchestra has

ascended a new step on its artistic ladder. Anissimov works regularly for Opera Ireland and Wexford Festival Opera in Ireland and is Hon President of the Wagner Society of Ireland. He is a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate in Music Honoris Causa from the National University of Ireland.

The Orchestra shares the stage with Denis Shapovalov, the graduate of Moscow Conservatory who was characterised as “Brilliant talent!” by the legendary Mstislav Rostropovich. By a unanimous decision of the jury he became a winner of the prestigious P. Tchaikovsky Competition in 1998.
